Mixed Dogs are Great Pets
February 12, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Does it make a difference if your pet dog is a pure breed dog or a mixed breed? In my case, dogs are dogs, whatever the type and kind it is. And why to other people question the intention of other pet owners to breed their mixed dogs? Let the dogs breed and have puppies, so long as they are responsible in caring for the young.
Mixed dogs are thought to be a misbehaving dog, unhealthy and ridden with worms. This is the kind of image mixed dogs have for themselves. I beg to disagree strongly. I have always had mixed dogs and all of them were well-behaved and obedient dogs. They are easy to be trained, and are quick to learn any trick and skill as well.
When it comes to pet dog health, I only brought them a few times to the veterinarian, mostly for checkup purposes. It was only once when I needed pet medication administered to my dog and this is because it was able to take in some laundry soap powder.
You don’t need to own purebred dogs – for me, mixed bred ones will do. I don’t need to spend too much money for the maintenance of pure breeds. Mixed dogs are strong and sturdy, healthy and intelligent too. They can provide any pet owner with the same quality of companionship as that of purebreds.

On Having a Great Pet Dog (or Cat)
January 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment
When getting a pet for yourself, most certainly it is either a dog or a cat. These are two of the most popular animals that pet lovers would want to own. Of course, there are other great animals that will work well as house pets such as birds, tropical fish, and even mice and snakes.
However, to many, it is either a pet dog or a pet cat – and nothing else. When wanting to buy a pet, make sure you are really decided to own one, as this will require a great amount of time and effort. Especially if you are getting a lovable dog, a very domesticated animal that really requires care and attention from its master.
Remember this - if you have a dog, this means you need to regularly walk it around the park. You likely need to clean your dog up as well as its place of stay such as the dog park. In short you will be required to spend substantial amount of time with your dog. You must realize that caring for pets is serious work. Are you willing to take on such responsibility?
Where do you get a pet dog or cat?
Most pet supply stores usually have pets for sale; the most common are cats, dogs, fish and birds. The nearest pet shop around the corner surely has some nice animals for sale. And while you are at it, try to buy all the things and accessories that go with your pet such as animal house, toys, mattresses, food pans among other things.
However, if there is no pet store that’s near your place, then you have another option of where to buy your pet, which is on the internet. Actually you have better chance of picking up the best animal if you will log on to as many pet sites as possible, and ordering for yourself the best pet available.
If you want a dog but you have a very tight budget, then why don’t you try the dog or animal shelters for some free dogs? Yes, this is true – the dog can be had for free at many animal shelters. Free, that is, if you promise to the animal shelter that you are a willing provider of care to these dogs or cats.

Petting Your Cat Right
January 16, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Compared to dogs, pet cats are very difficult animals to please and so petting it can be quite an arduous task to fulfill. While dogs are naturally receptive to petting, the can is an entirely different breed. Some may think it is such a simple task but petting a cat requires skills, and of course, some degree of patience.
The least that many cats react to petting is indifference, while a violent reaction to your loving approach is common. Do not fret. It might take some time but eventually you will get to befriend your pet cat and be able to pet it in due time – as much as you can. Cat petting is actually an effective way of establishing a master-pet relationship with it.
As said, to pet a cat is quite a task so finally being able to do it is a success in itself. How do you do it the first time? First of all, allow it to get acquainted with you by putting your hands in front of its nose; this will make the cat be more at ease with you.
Cats can be affectionate and are willing to be your friend. You will know a friendly one if it starts to rub its head or side of stomach on your hands or legs. This means that it is receptive to your petting. When rubbing your fingers on its head or body, do it gently. You will know that it is having a good time by closing its eyes and reciprocating your action by rubbing back and creating soft purrs.
Indeed, cat petting can be done – without the scratches and attempted bites – if one does it properly. Just be gentle and patience to your cat, and surely it will enjoy your petting actions, understanding them as a way of showing your affection to it.

January 9, 2008 | Leave a Comment
First of all, many pet owners think that just because they feed their pet dogs with heaps of dog food, they are doing fine in taking care of their beloved animals’ health. On the contrary, these pet owners are putting their dogs’ health in grave danger. Why? Overfed dogs become obese and may result in various illnesses for your pets.

There are many complications of obesity in your pets. One of the most common illnesses is diabetes. Another painful complication of obesity on your pet dogs is the damaging effects it can cause to their bones and joints.
Who would want to see their dogs suffering because of the immense pain caused by arthritis? Even with pet medication it can really become a stubbornly painful part of your dogs for the rest of his life. All this happening because of our mistake of overfeeding them.
An overweight dog becomes less active because of the decrease in its stamina. Of course, with all the extra weight around its body, how could it last the hours of regular morning walk you usually enjoy with it? Likewise, breathing becomes more difficult as obesity puts more pressure on the dog’s lungs, making it not work correctly.
Feeding more is not the right way, but feeding your dog right. Make sure that it is being fed adequate nourishment. You should know that your dog is a carnivore so concentrate of giving it meat. Carbohydrates can be given but in a moderate manner.
When giving your dog some pet food brands, you have to follow the portioning instructions of the food. Guidelines are provided on the food brand labels; these can help in feeding your dog appropriately.
As we watch our own diet because of our concern with our own health, don’t you think it is also logical that we do the same with our pet dogs? Let us be more aware of the fact that dogs, however nice to look at when really full in all angles, need to be trim, if only for the sake of their health. Feed pet dogs just right, and surely they will enjoy fit and healthful lives.

Caring for your Elderly Dog
January 6, 2008 | Leave a Comment

As a puppy and young dog, your pet dog can give you years and years of great companionship. But inevitably, your pet will finally reach the stage when he will show signs and symptoms of aging.
You may not know it but your dog is already suffering from some form of disease brought about by old age. It just seems already and in good health because dogs are not in the habit of exhibit hurt and pain cause by illness. It is only when the illness has reached its serious stage that you will notice a change in its habits and behavior.
If your dog is already old, it’s time to be more observant of its daily activities and moves. If you notice that it has become slower in its morning walk, or has difficulty trying to go up the stairs, then you may presume there is something wrong with its health.
Seeing something unusual or a deviation from its normal behavior such as in its sleeping, eating, urinating and bowel movement, it’s time to be concerned for any possible health problem.
It is best that you bring your pet dog immediately to the veterinarian for a thorough analysis of its health condition – so that he may be able to prescribe the appropriate pet medication to treat whatever illness it might have.
Remember, even in the case of our pet dogs, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. The earlier the veterinarian is able to detect any health problem, the greater possibility there will be for the illness to be cured.

Only Great Pet Dogs for Me, Please
December 29, 2007 | Leave a Comment
I chanced on this dog downtown, great fur, nice grayish color - you can see how in its stance, the dog is in great shape. Of course, you cannot tell a dog is great with only its appearance – how it looks. You can also tell a fine dog by its behavior, character and habits.

For me, a dog is a fine one if it acts its part as a family pet – can interact lovingly with humans, especially with the kids. The perfect dog is one, the loyalty of which is 100% with you, his master. Which usually is the case, as dogs are very loyal animals.
A great dog does well not only with his master, but also with the other household pets. I want my own pet to be a socializer, interacting with the other dogs. No hostile, aggressive dogs for me. I always look for one which has gentleness with the smaller household pets.
This is the kind of pet dog that I want to keep around me. Albeit I want one with great looks and stance – these qualities are just secondary, because for me a healthy and positive dog character and personality matters most.
