Dachshunds belong to the small dog breeds and actually come in two different sizes: the standard dachshund and the miniature type. The standard sized dachshund weighs between 15 and 32 pounds, while the miniatures belong to the 11 pounds and below.

If you will classify them according to types of coats or furs: there are smooth coated Dachshunds, the long-haired and the wire-haired ones. The long-haired dog types require that their coat is regularly trimmed.

Dachshunds, even as pets belong to small dog breed, need ample space on which it can move around and play. Your house must have a garden of good size in order for your pet dog to have room for exercise.

These dogs, especially the cute dachshund puppies, are very playful and friendly. They are bold and alert, and are great in working as guard dogs, immediately barking at unfamiliar faces coming at your home. Dachshunds love to be around people it is at ease with, especially with the other children at the household it belongs to.
