Keeping Your Dog Safe from Toxics
January 25, 2008 |
I am sure your pet dog is such a sniffer as any other curious dog can be. They are scavengers, if one must say it – you can see how stray ones put their head and nose into garbage on the streets. You would eat anything without even knowing what it is, just as long that it fits their mouth.

The same is with your pet dog which naturally would check on everything inside your home that it thinks can be eaten. Unfortunately what can be found in you house are not all safe – to your dog that is. The fact is, some that you might think is harmless is actually poisonous to your pet.
If there is one thing that you need to get off the sight and reach of your pet dog are detergents, soaps and cloth softener. These ordinary, seemingly safe laundry chemicals are actually toxic to dogs. You will know that your dog has ingested any of them when it has manifested signs such as drooling, vomiting, weakness on muscles and on serious cases, coma and ultimately, death.
Do not try inducing your dog to vomit if it has taken in this stuff. Instead bring it immediately to the veterinarian for proper medical attention and perhaps administration of pet medication.
Our medicine can treat us, but some can be deadly to dogs. Like for example the generic drug acetaminophen. It is possible for your pet to get killed just by ingesting 2 or three tablets of this drug.
Again, if your dog has taken such drug, never try to induce vomiting but instead bring your pet to the doctor immediately. Signs that your dog has taken in acetaminophen include vomiting and seizures to even death.
So now you know the poisonous stuff – aside from chocolates - to our pet dogs that we keep on our homes. Make our place pet dog-friendly. Keep detergents and softener up the laundry counter or cabinet. And have your acetaminophen bottles locked and kept inside the medicine cabinet. This way, our dogs will not find themselves suffering from unnecessary pain just because of our own carelessness.
