When getting a pet for yourself, most certainly it is either a dog or a cat. These are two of the most popular animals that pet lovers would want to own. Of course, there are other great animals that will work well as house pets such as birds, tropical fish, and even mice and snakes.

However, to many, it is either a pet dog or a pet cat – and nothing else. When wanting to buy a pet, make sure you are really decided to own one, as this will require a great amount of time and effort. Especially if you are getting a lovable dog, a very domesticated animal that really requires care and attention from its master.

Remember this - if you have a dog, this means you need to regularly walk it around the park. You likely need to clean your dog up as well as its place of stay such as the dog park. In short you will be required to spend substantial amount of time with your dog. You must realize that caring for pets is serious work. Are you willing to take on such responsibility?

Where do you get a pet dog or cat?

Most pet supply stores usually have pets for sale; the most common are cats, dogs, fish and birds. The nearest pet shop around the corner surely has some nice animals for sale. And while you are at it, try to buy all the things and accessories that go with your pet such as animal house, toys, mattresses, food pans among other things.

However, if there is no pet store that’s near your place, then you have another option of where to buy your pet, which is on the internet. Actually you have better chance of picking up the best animal if you will log on to as many pet sites as possible, and ordering for yourself the best pet available.

If you want a dog but you have a very tight budget, then why don’t you try the dog or animal shelters for some free dogs? Yes, this is true – the dog can be had for free at many animal shelters. Free, that is, if you promise to the animal shelter that you are a willing provider of care to these dogs or cats.

I am sure your pet dog is such a sniffer as any other curious dog can be. They are scavengers, if one must say it – you can see how stray ones put their head and nose into garbage on the streets. You would eat anything without even knowing what it is, just as long that it fits their mouth.

The same is with your pet dog which naturally would check on everything inside your home that it thinks can be eaten. Unfortunately what can be found in you house are not all safe – to your dog that is. The fact is, some that you might think is harmless is actually poisonous to your pet.

If there is one thing that you need to get off the sight and reach of your pet dog are detergents, soaps and cloth softener. These ordinary, seemingly safe laundry chemicals are actually toxic to dogs. You will know that your dog has ingested any of them when it has manifested signs such as drooling, vomiting, weakness on muscles and on serious cases, coma and ultimately, death.

Do not try inducing your dog to vomit if it has taken in this stuff. Instead bring it immediately to the veterinarian for proper medical attention and perhaps administration of pet medication.

Our medicine can treat us, but some can be deadly to dogs. Like for example the generic drug acetaminophen. It is possible for your pet to get killed just by ingesting 2 or three tablets of this drug.

Again, if your dog has taken such drug, never try to induce vomiting but instead bring your pet to the doctor immediately. Signs that your dog has taken in acetaminophen include vomiting and seizures to even death.

So now you know the poisonous stuff – aside from chocolates - to our pet dogs that we keep on our homes. Make our place pet dog-friendly. Keep detergents and softener up the laundry counter or cabinet. And have your acetaminophen bottles locked and kept inside the medicine cabinet. This way, our dogs will not find themselves suffering from unnecessary pain just because of our own carelessness.

Going fishing at the Bahamas, or perhaps enjoy some fantastic Mediterranean cruise? Surely you would want to bring along your pet dog with you on this vacation of yours. Leaving your dog alone at home while you are enjoying some great sun, food and surf is just unimaginable.

So you and the whole family have decided to go to a vacation with your beloved dog tagged along. Great! But on second thought, it is not as easy as you might think. First of all, if you are going on a resort and staying on a hotel, make sure that they would allow the presence of animals in their area.

On this regard check if the place that you will be staying for the holidays will not only be happy to see you but also your pets. What’s great is that many tourist destinations in the United States and all over the world are pet-friendly, meaning pets are also graciously treated as guests.

But most importantly, if you are bring your pet dog with you, first you have to bring it to the veterinarian for a thorough check-up to see if it is fit to travel and enjoy the holiday. If in case pet medication is needed, make sure you bring enough with you.

With all the goings-on in preparation for the travel, it is wise to likewise purchase and prepare whatever your dog needs such as pet apparel, leash, and even the vitamins and pet medication that it might need lest you forget it in the end.

Surely you will have a great, exciting vacation even with your pet dog around. But to be sure that it will be a hassle-free holiday adventure and there’s not a single hitch to worry about, it is best to always consider that a beloved animal is on board in all your planning and preparation.

Winter can be such a harsh season for your pet dog. The cold days and nights is a challenge humans go through, and surely this is the same case for dogs.

Therefore, if you are really concerned about your dog’s health, make sure that you bring it to the veterinarian to check on its condition and give it the appropriate pet medication and vitamins. You do not know if your pet is ill; the winter will definitely make it feel worse so a thorough check up is ideal.

It is great if your dog stays with you inside the house all the time. But sometimes they would like to wander outside. Check to see if the day is too cold. If it is, then better that you keep your pet inside.

However, if your pet dog stays outside the house even during winter for a considerable number of hours, make sure that the dog house that it stays in is cold proof, meaning it can provide your animal with warmth it needs. See to it that it has warm dog mattress and bed to feel comfortable with.

Another good idea to warm your pet dog is to have it wear dog sweater. You can buy not only fashionable ones but those that can really warm your animal, keep it conveniently cozy during the winter night. Dog sweaters as well as pet boots are available in many pet stores.

An advice that is a must to follow is to have fresh water always available for your dog. With the cold weather, your dog might tend to take in much less amount of water than usual (just like mine do), so have drinking water easily accessible to it.

Compared to dogs, pet cats are very difficult animals to please and so petting it can be quite an arduous task to fulfill. While dogs are naturally receptive to petting, the can is an entirely different breed. Some may think it is such a simple task but petting a cat requires skills, and of course, some degree of patience.

The least that many cats react to petting is indifference, while a violent reaction to your loving approach is common. Do not fret. It might take some time but eventually you will get to befriend your pet cat and be able to pet it in due time – as much as you can. Cat petting is actually an effective way of establishing a master-pet relationship with it.

As said, to pet a cat is quite a task so finally being able to do it is a success in itself. How do you do it the first time? First of all, allow it to get acquainted with you by putting your hands in front of its nose; this will make the cat be more at ease with you.

Cats can be affectionate and are willing to be your friend. You will know a friendly one if it starts to rub its head or side of stomach on your hands or legs. This means that it is receptive to your petting. When rubbing your fingers on its head or body, do it gently. You will know that it is having a good time by closing its eyes and reciprocating your action by rubbing back and creating soft purrs.

Indeed, cat petting can be done – without the scratches and attempted bites – if one does it properly. Just be gentle and patience to your cat, and surely it will enjoy your petting actions, understanding them as a way of showing your affection to it.

We might always think of dog food as the best type of food for our dogs. But, don’t you know that the meals that we always love to eat are also what our pet dogs would like for dinner? Indeed, a deviation from the usual dog food once in a while will certainly perk up your dog’s appetite.

A hot hamburger patty meal is definitely a great lunch or dinner treat for our pets especially with everything on it. What the master wants, the pet must also like (an exception would be chocolates, which I dig so much – but a no-no for my dog).

So, whenever I buy some ground meat such as beef or even pork, I see to it that I have enough to share with my pet dog. Of course, it also has its regular pet supply of dog food straight from the pet store, but also from the wet market comes the ingredients for the extra special food delight like the hamburger patty (or meatballs on tomato sauce) that your pet will surely love.

Remember, there are lots of home cooked meals that not only do we enjoy immensely – so do our dogs. Beef, pork, poultry and fish – cooked whatever way you can, and as long as you yourself will enjoy eating it, rest assured your dogs will too.

First of all, many pet owners think that just because they feed their pet dogs with heaps of dog food, they are doing fine in taking care of their beloved animals’ health. On the contrary, these pet owners are putting their dogs’ health in grave danger. Why? Overfed dogs become obese and may result in various illnesses for your pets.

There are many complications of obesity in your pets. One of the most common illnesses is diabetes. Another painful complication of obesity on your pet dogs is the damaging effects it can cause to their bones and joints.

Who would want to see their dogs suffering because of the immense pain caused by arthritis? Even with pet medication it can really become a stubbornly painful part of your dogs for the rest of his life. All this happening because of our mistake of overfeeding them.

An overweight dog becomes less active because of the decrease in its stamina. Of course, with all the extra weight around its body, how could it last the hours of regular morning walk you usually enjoy with it? Likewise, breathing becomes more difficult as obesity puts more pressure on the dog’s lungs, making it not work correctly.

Feeding more is not the right way, but feeding your dog right. Make sure that it is being fed adequate nourishment. You should know that your dog is a carnivore so concentrate of giving it meat. Carbohydrates can be given but in a moderate manner.

When giving your dog some pet food brands, you have to follow the portioning instructions of the food. Guidelines are provided on the food brand labels; these can help in feeding your dog appropriately.

As we watch our own diet because of our concern with our own health, don’t you think it is also logical that we do the same with our pet dogs? Let us be more aware of the fact that dogs, however nice to look at when really full in all angles, need to be trim, if only for the sake of their health. Feed pet dogs just right, and surely they will enjoy fit and healthful lives.
